CAD OVERVIEW

This module provides a description of atherosclerosis, including its causes, diagnosis, and treatment.

Learning Objectives

After successful completion of this module, you will be able to:

  • Define Atherosclerosis
  • List the three types of Atherosclerosis
  • Identify the disease states of coronary artery disease
  • List the modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors for coronary artery disease
  • Describe the location of the major coronary arteries and the myocardium that they supply
  • Understand the pathophysiology of atherosclerotic lesions
  • List methods to reduce or prevent Atherosclerosis
  • Define Acute Coronary syndrome
  • State the causes of angina
  • List the symptoms of angina
  • Describe the difference between stable and unstable angina
  • Describe treatment and patient care
  • Define Myocardial Infarction
  • Identify the causes of a myocardial infarction
  • Understand the mechanism of injury
  • Differentiate between a STEMI and an NSTEMI
  • Identify how an MI is diagnosed
  • Begin to understand the indicative changes on the 12 lead ECG, the area of the heart affected and the coronary artery that responds to the area
  • Understand the possible complications of an MI
  • Describe the treatment modalities for a Myocardial Infarction
